Meet the founder of MunTaco

Hello! My name is James Harrelson. I am here living in the wonderful state of South Carolina. I grew up around the Charleston area and have now been living in Manning, SC for about 3 years now.

I have always been a passionate person in general. Growing up, I fell in love with music. I have been playing music for close to 10 years and just now learning to create my own music. I also grew up playing sports like basketball, football, golf, and swimming. I eventually became captain of my high school swim team, which was a huge honor. I was in charge of leading team workouts and team cheers. It was a ton of fun being so involved in the swim team. Unfortunately, my senior year pretty much disappeared due to COVID. It completely ruined my last golf season, cutting it short. During COVID, my family moved to Manning, SC. There, I attended online classes at Trident Technical College. This was a rough year for me, as my childhood dog and best friend, Charlie, passed away. Living inside all day, and doing online classes, did not help with the grieving process.

So, I decided to attend the College of Charleston. Living in the dorms sparked a passion for cooking that I didn’t know I had. Cooking my own meals originally stemmed from just wanting to save money. However, my passion quickly grew stronger when I eventually moved into an apartment complex off campus. I introduced my roommates to my family tradition of having Mexican food on Friday nights as well.

Eventually, one of my roommates got me into fishing. One day, when we were both low on money and needed food, we decided to catch our own food. After 3 days of very little food, we finally caught a fish. Then another, and another, and another. We were ecstatic and couldn’t wait to eat them. We decided they would be best eaten in the form of a fish taco. Well, it turns out that that pan-seared fish combined with pineapple salsa was one of the best tacos we both have ever had.

After graduating college and searching for jobs, I soon found out that none of the jobs that I was looking into remotely interested me. Fearful of getting into a career that I would hate, I thought that I should make my own business. After seeing a boat that sold snow cones, I thought that selling tacos wouldn’t be that hard. Thus, MunTaco was born. Now, I am dedicated full-time to this idea. I have a vision that far exceeds simply selling tacos on a boat. But for now, I will be learning everything there is to know about starting a business from scratch, and hopefully making MunTaco a success.
